How long have you worked in your role, and what do you enjoy most?

About five months. Travelling across cemeteries throughout Australia gives me an opportunity to admire the varied, yet subtle differences in monuments and headstones. And don’t get me started on the Lichen!

What other roles/careers have you previously had?

I’m always ready to learn new things and as a result have worked in a lot of different areas. From tending the bar at an Irish pub, through installing computers and IT equipment, I ended up spending about 5 years working as a Grave Digger, Groundsman, Cremator Operator and also within Cemetery Administration.

What is your favourite quote?

Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours – Yogi Berra

What are three words that best describe you?

Handsome, Charming, Hyperbolist

Tell us about yourself outside of work.

I enjoy a bit of theatre, movies, spending time with loved ones. Books are fun too!

James Blakey Quote "The opportunity to map a cemetery for a remote indigenous community on Mornington Island was truly a unique experience. The community was welcoming, gracious and eager to share knowledge – an unforgettable encounter that will stay with me long after the sunburn fades."

Share with us your favourite place to travel to and why?

Japan is amazing in so many ways. From the densely packed cities to the calm country towns, the Japanese islands are a curious mix of tradition and technology. After 3 weeks I hadn’t even scratched the surface and I can’t wait to go back and bathe with some monkeys!

If you were an ice cream, what flavour would you be and why?

Ah finally, a philosophical question! Probably Rainbow as it’s indescribable.

What would your theme song be?

Hip to be Square by Huey Lewis & the News

If you could meet anyone in the world (past or present) who would it be and why?

Leonardo da Vinci – The guy was a fountain of scientific ideas and imagination (not to mention that I could ask about the whole “Mona Lisa Smile” situation).
